The Victorian Clontarf Academies gathered together in the final week of Term 1 for a hugely successful AFL 9s carnival and celebration dinner at the Sandringham Football Club.
Six teams from five Academies travelled to bayside Melbourne for the round-robin competition with Robinvale Academy finishing the day on top of the heap, despite strong competition from the two Mildura teams and groups from Bairnsdale, Warrnambool and Swan Hill.
The Robinvale lads then teamed up with Swan Hill and Bairnsdale to make up the East representative team in a showcase 18-on-18 game against the West side, made up of Mildura and Warrnambool Academy members.
As the on-field action drew to a close, preparations were being finalised for the dinner up in the football club’s function room, which proved to be a fantastic event involving the five Academies and representatives from a large number of Clontarf’s Melbourne-based corporate partners.
With Nigel Carmody from TLA as Master of Ceremony, Clontarf and invited guests enjoyed an entertaining evening as Clontarf CEO Gerard Neesham, Bairnsdale Academy alumni Keith Morgan and several Victorian operational staff and Academy members took up the microphone to showcase the great work of the Foundation and paint a remarkable picture of the past, present and the future of Clontarf – both in Victoria and across the nation.
The evening culminated in a fascinating Q-and-A discussion led by Carmody, where guests were treated to a unique insight into the lives of AFL footballers – Hawthorn star Cyril Rioli and former Clontarf student and now gilded Carlton footballer, Sam Petrevski-Seton.
The Clontarf Foundation, particularly those from the Victorian region, would like to thank TLA and Gilead staff for their support – both on and off the field – throughout the running of the carnival.
We would also like to express our gratitude to Cyril Rioli, Sam Petrevski- Seton and Keith Morgan, along with Mark Brayshaw from the AFLCA and guests from Gilead, Bunnings, Pinsent Masons, BMD, Bunzl, Spotless, Programmed, Crown, Little Group, Macquarie and Mitsubishi for taking part in the function and helping us celebrate the success of our first football carnival in Melbourne.
