Academies from the central corridor of the Northern Territory converged on Yirara College in Alice Springs for the much anticipated Great Central Region Billy Kart Derby in early June.

Katherine, Tennant Creek, Centralian Middle School, Centralian Senior College and Yirara Academies brought with them karts of all shapes and sizes, all handcrafted by the students in the lead up to the big day.

The contenders were put through their paces around a challenging track over 16 gruelling races, testing the prowess of the boys driving skills (as well as the fitness and strength of the boys pushing!).

The final race saw Yirara’s “Knight Riders” narrowly edge out Centralian Senior College’s “Mini Mamba” in a race that will be remembered for years to come.

Clontarf NT Central Regional Manager Shaun Cusack said the event was a terrific way to help the students develop important skills and grow a sense of camaraderie.

“These boys put in a lot of hard work to get their karts up to scratch so they have to work closely together and respect each other,” he said.

“But it’s also just a lot of great fun.”
