Steven was the only Aboriginal male to graduate Year 12 at Robinvale College in 2010, but through the support of his family and Clontarf, it has urged him to strive for more.

“I didn’t want to go to school much but my family and Clontarf were right there behind me,” Steven said.

Steven became a consistently high attender and participant of the Robinvale Clontarf Basketball team.

“My best memories from school are of our Clontarf basketball trips – playing ball and hanging out with mates.”

These trips ignited Steven’s passion and love for basketball, so much so that he landed himself a job at the Robinvale Recreation Centre straight out of high school.

After a year Steven moved onto Murray Valley Aboriginal Cooperative as their Administrator and has been working with them for the past four years.

“It’s a fantastic job, it suits my lifestyle and I feel like I am helping the community.”

Though Steven does love his work place, everyone that knows Steven knows basketball is his real passion. He represented the Victorian Indigenous Team in 2013 which ultimately lead to his selection to the Mildura Heat – a local team that competes in the BigV State Basketball Competition. Testament to Steven’s work ethic and talent, he was nominated as rookie of the year in his first year.

Steven’s level of commitment and motivation to work and basketball is outstanding. He travels two to three times a week to Mildura – approximately 90km to train and play for Workers Warriors during the off season.

In season, the Mildura Heat travel all over Victoria to compete. But Steven is at work Monday morning every week without fail – a truly great quality.

“I always used to second guess myself, but my experiences have taught me to never doubt yourself. The worst someone could say is no.”

Steven is taking some time off work later this year to travel to the west coast of the USA with an organised team to compete against local College teams.
