Kingaroy Clontarf Academy have taken out QLD’s Inaugural Junior Years Cricket Carnival held at Newtown Park in Toowoomba on Friday 6th November.

For most of the boys, it was their first experience playing any form of competitive cricket, and after a steady start, it wasn’t long before we started to see the 4′s and 6′s fly beyond the boundary ropes.

The nine teams that competed on the day were; Harristown Blue, Harristown White, Toowoomba Red, Toowoomba Navy, Warwick, Dalby, Kingaroy, Barambah Blue and Barambah Maroon.

The carnival was played under the super 8′s format, which saw the batsmen bat in pairs for two overs each, whilst in the field, each player got to bowl one over and rotate through every fielding position across the ground.

After some impressive displays by all teams (including a double hat-trick by Harristown White’s Cameron Butcher), we were left with two teams to play in the decider. Kingaroy and the Barambah Blue side.

Kingaroy were victorious in winning the final off the back of a tremendous display of bowling which was backed up by the players in the field.

It’s fair to say that every single boy had an excellent day with their eyes being opened to the idea of playing cricket as a sport. With a bit of guidance and development, it wouldn’t surprise me if the next Indigenous person to don the “Baggy Green” came from this carnival.

Many thanks to all Academy staff, in particular the hardworking lads from Harristown State High School who ran the event; the day would not have ran so smoothly without everyone’s help.

Also a big thank-you to Bruce Deem and Paul Frederickson from QLD Cricket who proved to be extra popular amongst the lads, with their speed gun testing out how fast they could bowl.

We look forward to next year’s carnival being bigger and better with some more fantastic cricket to be played.
