All the Queensland Clontarf Academies gathered on neutral ground in Brisbane on Friday November 4 to battle it out for the Annual Junior Clontarf QLD Cricket Carnival trophy.

All teams, made up of boys in Years 7-9, travelled down to the big smoke on the afternoon before, with the majority sleeping at the generous Iona College, thanks to Toni at Caltex who arranged this.

The boys enjoyed dinner at the Wynnum Manly Leagues Club, with special thanks to partner company BMD for teeing this up too. A great feed was had and some new friendships created, particularly between the young men and representatives from the various partner organisations.

Kingaroy Academy, last year’s winners, were early favourites; Warwick despite little prior experience looked capable; and Dalby seemed to have a bit of size and hitting power on their side.

Following a BBQ breakfast cooked at the ground, host Academy Harristown fielded two teams and along with a team comprising staff from several Clontarf Partner organisations, a two pool round robin carnival got underway.

There were many great examples of sportsmanship, cricket ability and chivalry on display.

The Brisbane heat provided some trying circumstances in the field in particular, but with ample sunscreen and hydration, the boys battled on manfully.

Steve Renouf of partner Aurizon and formerly of the Brisbane Broncos, mighty Maroons and Australian Kangaroos, provided some highlights in the field, equally matched by the tremendous support shown by Toni from Caltex as she cheered on her now adopted Warwick Warriors throughout the day’s play.

The team from Warwick seemed to respond to the boundary line support, going through the round robin undefeated. They ultimately faced the Dalby Dingoes in the final, as a three way tie in the other pool was separated by wickets lost.

Dalby batted first and posted an imposing total, but as the final pair from Warwick came to the crease, the game was still in the balance, with the Dingoes holding on narrowly to claim the title from the Warriors.

Thanks once again to Iona College for their incredible generosity and hospitality, BMD for their assistance with dinner on Thursday night, Toni and Caltex for all they did to make the day run so smoothly, and all the wonderful partner representatives that joined us at both the dinner and at the cricket.

We look forward to an even bigger and better carnival this time next year.
