Almost 20 Year 12 students had their eyes widened to a life in construction when they visited Hutchinsons Builders in Toowoomba, Queensland.

The company has a massive reach with projects involving high rises, mining projects, hotels, sport, health and education facilities, civil works, and many others.

Hutchinsons’ offices stretch from Cairns to Hobart, Bowen Basin to Pilbara and from Brisbane to Perth.

Hundreds of different types of jobs are provided through its operations within Australia, Japan, New Zealand and Canada.

To increase the support around apprentices they have set up their own training organisation.

With this in mind its Indigenous Program Manager, Mark Kucks asked the Clontarf Foundation directors at Harristown and Toowoomba state high schools to bring along students who might be interested in working within construction.

16 students made the visit and were joined by three others from Dalby State High School’s Clontarf Academy who travelled for an hour to get there.

Five Harristown State High School manual arts teachers also went on the invitation of their Clontarf Academy staff director Nathan Banauch.

What went on

A short presentation was then given and Harristown Academy operations worker, Daniel Blade, spoke about the Certificate I in Construction he did with Hutchinsons during his earlier days.

The Clontarf group was then taken to a worksite where they met the foreman.

He gave a short talk on what was expected from an apprentice and how he rose through the ranks to the position he has.

“The boys learned enthusiasm and a willingness to try were more important qualities within an apprentice than natural talent,” Harristown Academy Director, Nathan Banauch, said.

The following day Year 12 boys, who will graduate in less than three weeks, expressed an interest in construction as a career.

“It’s important to like your job and I believe these boys witnessed a future in which they could enjoy their work and support their families with ease,” Nathan said.
